Social Activities
You want to do something good? Then support one of many social projects, which are run by Rotary International. You can find further information at www.rotary.org.
One of the projects started by a Rotarian is the Shelterbox. Everyone knows this situation: You sit on your couch, watching television, and again there are pictures of the newest catastrophe (earthquake, flood, hurricane). You want to help, but how? By spending money? Changing the spended money into material takes time. So usually the support is too late for the victims. A British ex naval officer had the idea not to wait the next catastrophe, but to collect urgently needed stuff in advance, putting it into a box - the shelterbox. In each box there are 10 sleeping bags, a tent for 10 persons, a stove, light, tools, tabs to get drinking water, etc.
With only one of these boxes 10 (!) persons who have lost everything can be saved. The boxes are stored in Great Britain and the USA, waiting just to be taken to the next disaster area. Each of these boxes costs about € 700 (about US $ 850). Any donation is appreciated. For further information and the possibility to donate money, please visit www.shelterbox.org.
Your child wants to play with others at the same age without having the own parents around? Why not? From my own experience, I only can recommend one of the international children's camps that C.I.S.V. (Children's International Summer Villages) is running. There children from 12 different nations come together for one month to find new friends and to learn and understand other cultures. Each delegation has 4 children at the age of 11 (2 boys and 2 girls) and an adult accompanying them.
But even if your child already is too old, there are also exchange programs. They either last a month (twice 2 weeks right after each other within a summer) or they take place twice a month at the summer holidays of two following years. Additionally there are christmas and other meetings for the older ones (depending on the meeting up to the age of about 22 years).
The basic idea of C.I.S.V. comes from the US-American Dr. Doris Allen, who already organized the first chidren's camp with 60 children from 10 countries in Cincinatti (USA) at the founding year of 1951. Her aim was to prevend wars like world war II by letting children make friends with others, breaking down clichés and prejudices. Have a look at www.cisv.org. I can promise your child and yourself only can gain with one of C.I.S.V.'s programs!
Your child wants to spend an intire year abroad, staying at a guestfamily and visiting a school, but does not know
where to go? And you want to know what is awaiting your child when it takes part at one of these programs? Then visit www.austauschjahr.de, as you can find information and reports from those who took part at one of the exchange programs. The homepage is non profitable, but only for your child's sake.
